Teshima Art Museum

Ryue Nishizawa; Rei Naito · Tonosho, Japan · 2010

Ryue Nishizawa's thin concrete shell sits low in a former rice-terrace landscape, shaped like a droplet or shallow cave rather than a conventional museum. Two large openings expose the interior to wind, sound and changing weather, while Rei Naito's installation animates water across the floor. Architecture, artwork and environment are effectively inseparable, producing one of Japan's most singular contemporary spatial experiences.
