National Theatre of San Salvador
Daniel Beylard · San Salvador, El Salvador · 1917
The National Theatre is a major early-twentieth-century cultural monument in San Salvador’s historic center. Its formal exterior encloses richly decorated foyers and an intimate auditorium shaped by European theatrical conventions. The building survived periods of earthquake damage, alteration and restoration, making its continued use particularly significant in a city where much historic fabric has been lost. Architecturally, it represents the cosmopolitan public culture of the period and remains one of the capital’s principal performance spaces.
