Tazumal

Maya builders · Chalchuapa, El Salvador

Tazumal is a major pre-Columbian ceremonial complex whose surviving stepped platforms record multiple phases of construction and occupation rather than a single completion date. The principal structures combine broad terraces, stairways and temple platforms into a compact monumental core. Restoration has altered the appearance of some surfaces, but the site remains essential for understanding the architectural networks that connected western El Salvador to the wider Maya world. Its significance lies in the accumulated urban and ritual landscape rather than one isolated building campaign.
