Taliesin West

Frank Lloyd Wright · Scottsdale, United States · 1937

Taliesin West began in 1937 as Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home, studio and architectural laboratory in the Sonoran Desert. Low masonry walls incorporate local desert stone while timber beams, canvas roofs and later translucent materials create sheltered spaces that remain closely tied to the landscape. Rather than a single finished object, the complex evolved through decades of experimentation by Wright and his apprentices. Its terraces, courts and shifting levels demonstrate an architecture shaped by climate, topography and continuous making.
