Tainan Art Museum Building 2

Shigeru Ban Architects + Joe Shih Architects · Tainan, Taiwan · 2019

Tainan Art Museum Building 2 is organized beneath a large fractal-like roof that creates shaded outdoor terraces around stacked gallery volumes. Shigeru Ban Architects and Joe Shih Architects use the projecting canopy to respond to Tainan’s intense sun while making circulation between galleries and exterior public space part of the museum experience. The building’s irregular polygonal massing contrasts with the denser historic urban fabric around it. Opened in 2019, the project is a major contemporary cultural addition to Tainan and a climate-responsive reinterpretation of the museum as a porous civic building.
