Szczecin Philharmonic
Barozzi Veiga / Fabrizio Barozzi + Alberto Veiga · Szczecin, Poland · 2014
Barozzi Veiga’s Szczecin Philharmonic turns a concert institution into an abstract white urban landmark. A sequence of steep gabled roof forms echoes the scale and rhythm of surrounding historic buildings while the monolithic translucent façade removes almost all conventional detail. Inside, a dramatic white foyer contrasts with the warm gold of the principal concert hall. Completed in 2014, the project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respond to an interrupted urban context through silhouette and proportion rather than imitation. It received the 2015 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award.
