Sydney Harbour Bridge

Dorman Long & Co + John Bradfield · Sydney, Australia · 1932

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a monumental steel through-arch carrying road, rail, pedestrian and bicycle traffic across Port Jackson. Its vast riveted arch and granite-faced pylons combine heavy engineering with a carefully composed civic image. Chief engineer John Bradfield oversaw the project while British firm Dorman Long & Co carried out the detailed design and construction. Opened in 1932, the bridge fundamentally reorganized movement between central Sydney and the North Shore and became one of Australia’s most recognizable works of infrastructure.
