Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum

Seljuk master builders · Mary Region, Turkmenistan · 1157

The mausoleum of Sultan Ahmad Sanjar was the architectural centerpiece of twelfth-century Merv and remains one of the most important surviving Seljuk monuments. A massive cubic chamber supports a large double-shell dome that once carried a turquoise exterior finish, creating an exceptionally clear geometric composition. The building was badly damaged during the Mongol destruction of Merv in 1221 and has undergone major restoration, including work in the early twenty-first century. Its scale, dome construction and urban prominence demonstrate the technical and symbolic ambition of Seljuk architecture at the height of Merv’s importance.
