Storey Hall – RMIT Extension

Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM) · Melbourne, Australia · 1995

ARM’s 1990s refurbishment and extension of Storey Hall deliberately contrasts with the nineteenth-century hall it adjoins. Faceted green surfaces, fragmented geometry and an oversized patterned façade turn mathematical and political references into architectural ornament. The intervention inserts new academic, gallery and public spaces while retaining the historic building as part of the composition rather than treating it as a neutral backdrop. Completed in 1995, the project became an emblem of Melbourne’s distinctive postmodern architectural culture and of RMIT’s use of experimental design in its city campus.
