Stockholm City Hall

Ragnar Östberg · Stockholm, Sweden · 1923

Ragnar Östberg’s Stockholm City Hall combines civic monumentality with an unusually rich sequence of courts, halls and waterfront spaces. Inaugurated in 1923, the brick complex draws on Nordic National Romanticism, Renaissance palaces and vernacular traditions without becoming a direct historical copy. Its tower is one of Stockholm’s defining landmarks, while interiors such as the Blue Hall and Golden Hall create contrasting ceremonial atmospheres. The building’s handling of mass, material and public procession makes it one of Sweden’s most important works of early twentieth-century architecture.
