Stegastein Viewpoint
Todd Saunders + Tommie Wilhelmsen · Aurland, Norway · 2006
Stegastein is a 30-meter-long laminated-timber viewing platform that projects dramatically above Aurlandsfjorden before curving downward at its end. Designed by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen and opened in 2006 as part of Norway’s National Tourist Routes program, the intervention is deliberately simple: one strong geometric gesture intensifies the experience of an already spectacular landscape. The transparent edge minimizes visual obstruction while the heavy timber structure gives the platform a physical presence appropriate to the mountainous setting. It has become a landmark of Norway’s architecture-led scenic-route strategy.
