State Bank of Nizhny Novgorod

Vladimir Pokrovsky · Nizhny Novgorod, Russia · 1913

Vladimir Pokrovsky’s State Bank is a richly composed early-twentieth-century civic complex that draws on medieval Russian architecture rather than European classicism. Deeply modeled façades, steep roofs, towers and elaborate interior paintings create an institutional image tied to national historical revival. The building was completed in 1913 for the tercentenary of the Romanov dynasty and remains one of Nizhny Novgorod’s most extraordinary public interiors. Its architectural significance lies in the unusually complete integration of banking program, decorative art and a deliberately archaic national style.
