Stahl House

Pierre Koenig · Los Angeles, United States · 1960

Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House is a compact steel-and-glass residence cantilevered along a dramatic Hollywood Hills site. Its L-shaped plan wraps a swimming pool while floor-to-ceiling glazing turns the Los Angeles basin into the principal visual element of the living spaces. Built as Case Study House No. 22, the project demonstrated how standardized steel construction could produce a precise yet highly atmospheric domestic environment. Julius Shulman’s photographs helped make the house an enduring symbol of post-war California modernism.
