Stadio Artemio Franchi

Pier Luigi Nervi · Florence, Italy · 1931

Pier Luigi Nervi's Florence stadium made reinforced concrete both structure and public image. Its cantilevered grandstand roof, helical external stairs and slender Marathon Tower demonstrate the expressive potential of a material still associated with industrial construction. Repeated frames organize the stands with little applied decoration, while circulation elements become sculptural markers around the oval perimeter. Built originally as the Giovanni Berta Stadium and later renamed for Artemio Franchi, it is a major work of Italian interwar engineering and modern architecture. Subsequent adaptations and current redevelopment debates make documentation of the surviving Nervi fabric especially important.
