St. Paul's Cathedral, Abidjan

Aldo Spirito · Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire · 1985

St. Paul’s Cathedral uses an expressive modern structure rather than a conventional twin-tower church composition. A tall sweeping concrete form rises above the entrance and supports a broad roof over the worship space, while extensive glazing and stained glass bring color into the interior. Aldo Spirito’s design takes advantage of the sloping Plateau site and views toward the city. Completed in 1985, the cathedral is a major example of late twentieth-century ecclesiastical architecture in West Africa and a prominent Abidjan landmark.
