St. John’s Cathedral

Unknown · Belize City, Belize · 1820

St. John’s Cathedral is a major early colonial landmark built largely from brick and timber in Belize City. Its restrained exterior, simple Romanesque-influenced openings and exposed interior roof structure reflect both British ecclesiastical traditions and the material conditions of the Caribbean coast. The building has served as an important Anglican institution for two centuries and remains unusually intact within a city repeatedly affected by hurricanes and urban change. Its architectural character is defined as much by craft and material durability as by monumentality.
