St. George’s Cathedral

Sir Arthur Blomfield · Georgetown, Guyana · 1894

St. George’s Cathedral is one of Georgetown’s most important timber landmarks. Designed by Arthur Blomfield and constructed between 1889 and 1894, the Gothic Revival church translates the verticality, pointed arches and elaborate roof structure of a masonry cathedral into a largely wooden building suited to local construction traditions. Its light-painted exterior and tall spire form a distinctive civic marker in the low-rise colonial city, while the exposed timber structure is central to the interior experience.
