Sri Lankan Parliament Complex

Geoffrey Bawa · Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka · 1982

Geoffrey Bawa's Parliament complex occupies an island setting within an artificial lake. Its low, spreading buildings and layered roofs reinterpret forms associated with Sri Lankan architecture for a modern national institution. Water, landscape and the approach across the site are central to the composition, giving the legislature a distinct relationship with its surroundings. Visiting: Bawa's parliament on its lake island is seen from the lakeside road; interior visits require advance permission.
