Sluishuis

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) + Barcode Architects · Amsterdam, Netherlands · 2022

Sluishuis is a residential block on Amsterdam’s IJburg waterfront, designed by BIG with Barcode Architects. The building takes the familiar courtyard block and lifts, cuts, and tilts it to create a dramatic opening toward the water. Its sloping underside frames views, invites movement along the quay, and turns the block into a gateway between neighborhood and lake. The project combines apartments, public routes, boat access, and waterfront life in one sculptural mass. Its strength lies in the way it treats the perimeter block as a flexible urban device rather than a fixed typology. Sluishuis is particularly rewarding to visit because its spatial effect changes from street, water, and courtyard perspectives.
