Sirius Building

Tao Gofers · Sydney, Australia · 1980

The Sirius Building was created as public housing for residents displaced by redevelopment in The Rocks. Tao Gofers composed the complex from stacked concrete modules of different sizes, producing terraces, roof gardens and varied apartment types rather than a uniform slab. Its stepped profile responds to harbour views and the steep topography while giving the building a strongly sculptural brutalist identity. Completed around 1980 and opened in 1981, Sirius became a major focus of heritage and housing debates before its later private redevelopment.
