Singer House

Pavel Suzor · Saint Petersburg, Russia · 1904

Singer House occupies one of Saint Petersburg’s most prominent corners opposite Kazan Cathedral. Pavel Suzor designed the steel-framed commercial building with large display windows, rich stone and bronze decoration, and a distinctive glass globe crowning the corner tower. The structure used modern commercial-building technology while fitting into the controlled height and urban rhythm of Nevsky Prospekt. Completed in 1904 for the Singer sewing-machine company, it later became the famous House of Books and remains one of the city’s defining examples of Russian Art Nouveau.
