Simmons Hall, MIT
Steven Holl Architects · Cambridge, United States · 2002
Simmons Hall gives a student residence the image of a large porous block. Steven Holl organized rooms, shared spaces and circulation within a repeated grid interrupted by larger openings and internal gathering areas. Completed in 2002, the building explores how a dense residential programme can include light, views and communal space throughout its depth. The façade's regular small openings make the larger voids especially legible. Its public architectural experience is primarily from the campus approach and surrounding streets. Visiting: A private student residence. View from public routes. Interior access requires authorization.
