Sidney Myer Music Bowl
Barry Patten / Yuncken Freeman · Melbourne, Australia · 1959
The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is a large outdoor performance venue defined by a tensile roof spanning over the stage and audience seating. Barry Patten’s design uses cables and a lightweight membrane to achieve a broad sheltered space with minimal obstruction, creating an architectural image closely tied to engineering. Set within Kings Domain, the building is approached through landscape rather than a conventional urban frontage. Opened in 1959, it was an important early Australian experiment in large-span tensile construction and remains one of Melbourne’s principal outdoor cultural venues.
