Shukhov Tower
Vladimir Shukhov · Moscow, Russia · 1922
Vladimir Shukhov’s radio tower is a landmark of lightweight structural engineering. Six stacked hyperboloid lattice sections taper upward, achieving exceptional height with a relatively small quantity of steel. The geometry converts a complex engineering problem into a remarkably transparent architectural form, demonstrating principles Shukhov had developed through earlier towers and industrial structures. Completed in 1922, the Moscow tower became an emblem of early Soviet technological ambition and remains one of the clearest examples of structural invention producing architectural expression without conventional cladding or monumental mass.
