Shrine of the Báb (Bahá’í Holy Places)
William Sutherland Maxwell · Haifa, Israel · 1953
The Shrine of the Báb is the landmark golden-domed shrine on Mount Carmel in Haifa and one of the Bahá’í Holy Places. The Báb’s remains were interred here in 1909; the stone superstructure designed by Canadian architect William Sutherland Maxwell was completed in 1953. Its composition combines a classical colonnaded base with an octagonal drum and gilded dome, set within the terraced gardens of the Bahá’í World Centre. The shrine and surrounding holy places in Haifa and Acre form part of the UNESCO-listed Bahá’í Holy Places.
