Shrine of Remembrance

Hudson & Wardrop · Melbourne, Australia · 1934

Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance is a monumental war memorial organized around a high central sanctuary and a broad sequence of axial stairs and terraces. Hudson and Wardrop drew on ancient classical precedents, particularly the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, while using an austere stone palette and carefully controlled ceremonial geometry. The elevated site creates a direct visual relationship with the city along the memorial axis. Opened in 1934, the Shrine remains one of Melbourne’s most significant civic landscapes and a powerful example of interwar commemorative architecture.
