Kenzo Tange · Tokyo, Japan · 1967

This compact Ginza tower is one of the clearest built expressions of Japan's Metabolist movement. Offices project from a tall cylindrical service core as distinct capsules or boxes, making growth and change legible in the building's silhouette. Although the envisioned expansion never occurred, the project remains an unusually direct demonstration of Tange's interest in architecture as an adaptable urban infrastructure rather than a fixed composition.
