Shah-i-Zinda
Multiple Timurid and earlier patrons and craftsmen · Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Shah-i-Zinda is a dense necropolis assembled over centuries along a narrow processional route on the edge of ancient Afrasiab. Mausoleums, mosques and gateways create an extraordinary sequence of small monumental façades clad in carved terracotta, glazed tile and mosaic faience. Many of the best-known structures date to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, but the ensemble incorporates earlier and later phases, making a single completion date misleading. Architecturally, the complex is exceptional for the way repeated portals, changing levels and intense surface decoration turn movement between individual tombs into one continuous spatial experience.
