Seville Cathedral
Alonso Martínez; Charles Galter; Alonso Rodríguez; Juan Gil de Hontañón · Seville, Spain · 1506
Seville Cathedral transformed the site of the city's former congregational mosque into an immense Gothic church. Its main construction campaign reached completion in the early sixteenth century, while later additions continued to reshape the complex. The surviving Giralda and orange-tree courtyard retain important parts of the earlier Islamic arrangement. Inside, the scale of the nave, dense stone supports and chapels establish a very different spatial order. The building is most revealing when read as a sequence of historical layers rather than a stylistically uniform monument. Its relationship to the surrounding streets also makes its enormous volume legible. Visiting: Cultural visits are ticketed. Worship access follows separate arrangements.
