SESC Pompéia
Lina Bo Bardi · São Paulo, Brazil · 1982
Lina Bo Bardi transformed a former industrial complex into one of Latin America’s most influential cultural centers. Retained brick sheds contain communal programs, while two rough-concrete towers hold sports and service spaces and are linked by dramatic elevated bridges. Rather than erase the existing factory, the project treats reuse, structure and informal collective life as architectural material. SESC Pompéia is a central reference for adaptive reuse, Brazilian brutalism and Bo Bardi’s socially oriented approach to public architecture.
