Serralves Museum

Álvaro Siza Vieira · Porto, Portugal · 1999

Álvaro Siza's Serralves Museum brings contemporary galleries into an established estate of gardens, mature trees and an Art Deco villa. Opened in 1999, its low white volumes organize a sequence of rooms, courts and carefully framed views rather than a single monumental frontage. Changes in direction and proportion give the route a measured rhythm while allowing exhibitions to occupy the building in different ways. The relationship between architecture and park is central: the museum both withdraws from its surroundings and repeatedly reconnects visitors with them. Later additions continue the estate's development as a cultural landscape. Visiting: Museum and park visits require tickets, with concessions and free periods for eligible visitors.
