Secession Building

Joseph Maria Olbrich · Vienna, Austria · 1898

Joseph Maria Olbrich’s exhibition building combines white geometric masses with a gilded leaf dome. The compact composition served as an architectural declaration of the Vienna Secession, with ornament concentrated around entrances and symbolic details rather than spread uniformly across the facade. Visiting: Entry is ticketed (including the Beethoven Frieze); the golden laurel dome and facade can be seen freely.
