Schindler House
Rudolph M. Schindler · West Hollywood, United States · 1922
Rudolph Schindler’s Kings Road House was conceived as a radical shared dwelling and studio for two couples. Tilt-up concrete walls, lightweight timber construction and sliding canvas or glass panels dissolve conventional boundaries between rooms, gardens and sleeping terraces. The plan replaces a typical domestic hierarchy with flexible communal work and living spaces around planted courts. Completed in 1922, the house is foundational to Southern California modernism and anticipated later experiments in open planning and indoor-outdoor living.
