Säynätsalo Town Hall
Alvar Aalto · Säynätsalo, Finland · 1952
Säynätsalo Town Hall is a compact civic complex organized around an elevated courtyard and completed in 1952. Alvar Aalto used dark red brick, timber and carefully controlled changes in level to give the small municipal building a sense of gravity without conventional monumentality. Council chambers rise above the composition while offices, library spaces and circulation define the courtyard edges. The project is admired for integrating landscape, material craft and civic symbolism, and is one of the clearest examples of Aalto’s post-war approach to democratic public architecture.
