Sasazuka Greenway Toilet

Junko Kobayashi / Gondola Architects · Tokyo, Japan · 2023

Sasazuka Greenway Toilet is one of the later additions to THE TOKYO TOILET initiative in Shibuya, designed by Junko Kobayashi of Gondola Architects. Its compact public program is treated as a civic object rather than a purely utilitarian amenity, using a sculptural arrangement of weathering-steel cylindrical forms to create a strong identity along the greenway. The project reflects the wider ambition of the initiative: to make public toilets safer, cleaner, more accessible, and more dignified through architectural design. Its material expression gives the small structure durability and presence, while the rounded forms soften the experience of entering and moving around the facility. As part of a network of architect-designed toilets across Shibuya, it demonstrates how modest infrastructure can contribute to urban legibility, everyday comfort, and the cultural value of public space.
