São Paulo Cathedral

Maximilian Emil Hehl · São Paulo, Brazil · 1954

São Paulo Cathedral gives the city's historic centre a major Gothic Revival religious building. Designed by Maximilian Emil Hehl, the present church was developed through a long twentieth-century campaign and dedicated in 1954. Its towers, pointed forms and large dome combine several historical references within a substantial urban monument. The relationship with Praça da Sé is central to its civic presence, while the interior's repeated bays and height create a more concentrated spatial experience than the surrounding square. Visiting: The main cathedral is a working place of worship. Crypt visits and special tours may be charged separately.
