Santa Maria della Spina

Lupo di Francesco; Andrea Pisano; Nino Pisano · Pisa, Italy · 1376

This tiny Gothic church concentrates an extraordinary density of pinnacles, tabernacles and sculpture into a jewel-like object on the Arno. The building was dismantled and reconstructed on higher ground in the nineteenth century, making its present condition an instructive case of preservation altering an architectural object's original relationship to the river.
