Santa Maria della Scala

Unknown hospital workshops · Siena, Italy · 1330

Santa Maria della Scala is a vast former hospital directly opposite Siena Cathedral. Developed over centuries, it combined care for pilgrims, the poor and abandoned children with an unusually ambitious artistic program. Its layered structure descends with the hillside through halls, chapels, service spaces, streets and archaeological remains, making the complex read almost as a city within the city. The Pellegrinaio is celebrated for frescoes that depict the hospital's charitable functions, while contemporary museum use has opened additional levels. The listed date is an approximate medieval anchor; the building is a multi-phase ensemble adapted and restored rather than a single completed work.
