Santa Maria Church, Marco de Canaveses

Álvaro Siza Vieira · Marco de Canaveses, Portugal · 1996

Álvaro Siza's Santa Maria Church gives a contemporary parish centre a powerful but restrained presence above Marco de Canaveses. Completed in 1996, its white volumes combine a tall entrance, curved elements and a simple nave whose daylight is carefully controlled. A low horizontal opening introduces a view toward the surrounding landscape, while higher light sources help shape the atmosphere of the interior. The project includes more than the main worship room, organizing related parish spaces around its approach. Its significance lies in how familiar religious functions are made spatially distinctive through proportion, light and measured changes in enclosure. Visiting: A working parish church.
