Santa Ana Cathedral

Unknown · Santa Ana, El Salvador · 1959

Santa Ana Cathedral presents a highly vertical neo-Gothic façade unusual within El Salvador’s predominantly colonial and neoclassical ecclesiastical heritage. Slender towers, pointed arches and dense exterior ornament frame a long nave and prominent altar, giving the church a strongly European historicist character. Its construction extended across several decades, producing a building that became inseparable from Santa Ana’s principal civic square. The cathedral is an important regional landmark and a useful example of Gothic Revival architecture adapted to Central America.
