Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site

Lluís Domènech i Montaner; Pere Domènech i Roura · Barcelona, Spain · 1930

Sant Pau reimagined the hospital as a garden city of separate pavilions, connected by underground circulation. Lluís Domènech i Montaner's design uses landscaped gaps, daylight, coloured ceramics and expressive brickwork to give medical care an unusually generous setting. His son Pere continued the work, and the historic complex was completed in 1930. Clinical services moved to a neighbouring hospital in 2009, allowing the earlier buildings to be restored for cultural and institutional use. The most revealing architectural sequence moves from the monumental administration pavilion through the tunnels into the gardens between wards. Visiting: The historic pavilions are a visitor attraction. The working hospital is a separate facility.
