Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza

Francesco Borromini · Rome, Italy · 1660

Behind Giacomo della Porta's university courtyard, Borromini develops a star-like centralized church from interlocking concave and convex geometries. The interior rises into a luminous dome while the exterior culminates in the extraordinary spiraling lantern, producing one of Rome's most sophisticated relationships between plan, section and urban silhouette.
