Sant Antoni Market

Antoni Rovira i Trias · Barcelona, Spain · 1882

Sant Antoni Market occupies an entire block at the edge of Barcelona's Eixample. Antoni Rovira i Trias's nineteenth-century design uses a clear iron structure and a prominent central crossing to organize an extensive covered marketplace. The restored complex reopened in 2018 following a long renovation by Ravetllat Ribas Arquitectes. That intervention connected renewed trading spaces with archaeological remains discovered beneath the building and improved the surrounding pedestrian setting. The market is valuable as both an industrial-age public building and an example of how civic infrastructure can remain active through careful adaptation. Visiting: The market is freely accessible during trading hours.
