Sanctuary of Truth
Lek Viriyaphant and Thai woodcarvers · Pattaya, Thailand · 1981
The Sanctuary of Truth is an immense all-timber structure rising above the coast at Pattaya. Initiated by patron Lek Viriyaphant, the building combines religious and philosophical imagery from Thai, Khmer, Indian and Chinese traditions within a cross-shaped composition of tall halls and spires. Nearly every surface is carved, so structure, ornament and iconography become inseparable. Traditional joinery and ongoing hand craftsmanship distinguish the project from a conventional theme attraction, even as its monumental silhouette is deliberately theatrical. Construction began in 1981 and continues through successive carving and conservation campaigns; the year therefore records the start of the work, not completion. Protective equipment and controlled routes may be required during a visit.
