San Thome Basilica

Captain J. A. Power · Chennai, India · 1896

San Thome Basilica uses a pale Gothic Revival exterior, a tall spire and a long nave to establish its coastal presence in Chennai. The present church continues a much older Christian tradition associated with the site. Its architectural character is best read through the contrast between the sharply outlined exterior and the quieter rhythm of the interior. Visiting: Working cathedral. Visit outside services and follow local rules for the shrine and photography.
