San Telmo Museum Extension
Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos · San Sebastián, Spain · 2011
Nieto Sobejano's 2011 extension places new museum accommodation against the wooded slope behind San Sebastián's former Dominican convent. Its perforated metal skin supports a changing surface of vegetation, allowing the addition to act as an intermediate layer between historic masonry and Mount Urgull. The intervention connects renewed galleries with the older church and cloister rather than competing through a freestanding monument. The most useful view is from the public plaza, where the low extension appears beside the convent. Inside, changing materials and levels make the transition between historic and contemporary spaces legible. Visiting: The extension is part of a ticketed museum in a former convent.
