San Pedro Sula Cathedral
José Francisco Zalazar · San Pedro Sula, Honduras · 1949
San Pedro Sula's cathedral gives the city's central park a prominent religious frontage. The twentieth-century building, associated with José Francisco Zalazar, uses a symmetrical composition, towers and repeated arches to establish a clear monumental image. Its urban significance comes partly from its position beside the principal public square, where the church can be viewed as a whole. Inside, the repeated structural bays organize a different and more measured spatial experience from the activity of the surrounding streets and park. Visiting: A working cathedral.
