San Galgano Abbey

Cistercian builders · Chiusdino, Italy · 1288

San Galgano is a roofless Cistercian abbey set in open countryside southwest of Siena. The surviving church retains a complete sequence of pointed arcades, clerestory openings and exterior walls, allowing the disciplined Gothic structure to be read against the sky. Its Latin-cross plan and restrained ornament reflect Cistercian ideals, while the missing roof transforms the nave into an atmospheric landscape enclosure. Nearby, the hermitage of Montesiepi preserves a separate circular chapel and the sword associated with Saint Galgano. The date marks completion of the medieval abbey church; abandonment, material reuse and later stabilization produced the present ruin condition.
