San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane

Francesco Borromini · Rome, Italy · 1646

Borromini turns an extremely restricted corner site into one of Baroque architecture's most intense spatial experiments. The oval plan, alternating concave and convex surfaces, coffered dome and later undulating facade create a continuously unstable geometry that is best understood by moving through the tiny interior.
