San Andrés Archaeological Park
Maya builders (individual architects not recorded) · San Juan Opico, El Salvador
San Andrés preserves the ceremonial centre of a Maya settlement in El Salvador's Zapotitán Valley. Raised platforms, pyramid structures and the acropolis establish a hierarchy between large public spaces and the buildings associated with political authority. The surviving remains represent several construction phases rather than a single completed design. Follow the changes in ground level and the connections between the main groups to understand how the site organized movement, visibility and access within the former settlement. Visiting: An archaeological park with paid admission. The architectural remains span several building phases. No single documented completion year applies to this multi-phase historic site.
